Project Description

The 3510 Rhode Island Avenue Mural Project, led by the City of Mount Rainier Arts Commission, brings dynamic public art to the heart of the City’s downtown core, adding to the growing collection of public arts that reflect the City’s vibrant art community.  The project transforms the exterior of the building into a vibrant and welcoming landmark that reflects the City’s creative community. Situated along Rhode Island Avenue, a major gateway into Washington, DC, the mural will be seen by tens of thousands of commuters daily and serves as a visual celebration of Mount Rainier’s cultural identity.

In November 2024, the Arts Commission launched the project with a call for artists. After receiving numerous submissions, 3711 Studios Artist Collective, led by local artist and muralist Austin D. Morris, was awarded the project, winning 57% of the community vote.

The design titled “Ripple,” wraps the three visible walls of 3510 Rhode Island Ave in an imaginative celebration of movement, nature, and community. Inspired directly by feedback from Mount Rainier residents, the work invites passersby to pause, reflect, and witness the quiet yet powerful impact of movement—physical, emotional, and cultural.
