Street and road safety is a top priority for the City of Mount Rainier. In 2023, the Vision Zero Task Force, comprising volunteer residents, elected officials, and city staff, in partnership with Toole Design Group, a company specializing in designing innovative, pedestrian-focused streets, developed and endorsed the implementation of the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan outlines actionable, measurable strategies to make all of the City’s streets and roads safe for everyone and to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Based on community feedback and a comprehensive street and sidewalk study by Toole Design, the plan is a roadmap for a safer Mount Rainier.
In July 2023, the City applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Grant Program. By December 2023, USDOT announced the City of Mount Rainier as one of the recipients of the SS4A grant, securing $9.7 million in funding for its safe streets initiatives.
Planned improvements under SS4A include the Levee Trail Crossing, Bunker Hill Road at 35th Street, Bunker Hill Road at 36th Street, and the 31st Street and Food Forest area.
The projects were identified through a combination of existing conditions analysis, crash analysis findings, and public engagement.
