The City of Mount Rainier Police Department would like to inform residents, visitors, and local businesses about the City’s designated Emergency Routes and what they mean for the community.

What is an Emergency Route?
An Emergency Route is a roadway designated to ensure quick and unobstructed access for emergency vehicles, including police, fire, rescue, and public works, during emergencies such as fires, medical calls, severe weather events, evacuations, or other critical incidents.

  • Why Emergency Routes Matter?
     Emergency Routes are essential to:
  • Reduce response times for first responders
  • Ensure access to hospitals, schools, and critical infrastructure
  • Support evacuation or emergency operations when necessary
  • Protect public safety during emergencies and disasters

Blocked or improperly used emergency routes can delay lifesaving services.

Please refer to the map, where the City’s designated Emergency Route is outlined in red for easy identification.

What This Means for Residents and Visitors

  • No parking is permitted on designated Emergency Routes during posted times or emergency conditions.
  • Vehicles must not block intersections, hydrants, or travel lanes along these routes.
  • During emergencies, traffic restrictions or temporary closures may occur to allow emergency vehicles to move freely.
  • Towing or enforcement action may occur if vehicles obstruct an Emergency Route.

How You Can Help

  • Observe posted signs indicating Emergency Routes.
  • Avoid stopping, standing, or parking along these routes.
  • Follow instructions from police officers, fire personnel, or other emergency officials.

Stay informed during emergencies through official City communications.

The cooperation of our community is critical in ensuring that emergency responders can do their jobs safely and efficiently. These routes exist to protect lives, property, and the overall safety of Mount Rainier.
