Free Trees: The Mount Rainier Tree Commission is partnering with the Joe’s GreenWorks program for a second year to plant trees that clean our air, filter our water, beautify our neighborhood, and reduce flooding. Through this opportunity, trees for Mount Rainier residents will be planted in the fall of 2025.
Who can participate? Any resident of Mount Rainier is eligible for a street tree or yard tree. The location must already have adequate space for planting a tree in the ground. We are interested in working in areas of the city that have less tree canopy, so please help us spread the word.
How does the program work? The program offers both a free tree planting consultation and free native canopy tree(s) installed in your yard or in public space, such as the tree box in front of your residence, school grounds or parks. The program also provides support for watering trees for up to two years, if planted in public space.
What kind of trees are available? The trees will be on 5 to 7 feet tall when planted and will have a 1 to 1 ½ inch trunk diameter. Planted trees will include a bed of mulch.
The Mount Rainier Joe's GreenWorks Tree Planting offers a palette of native canopy trees and a few smaller ornamental trees. Fruit trees are not available. The exact list changes from season to season, subject to availability.
