The Mount Rainier Arts Commission helped select Eric B. Ricks to create a contemporary outdoor mural located at 3840 34th Street.
Eric B. Ricks is a celebrated muralist, sustainable arts creative, and founder of Phoenix Fine Arts and Design. Always evolving, Ricks is a focused and expressive student of the arts. Embracing photography early on, Ricks quickly developed as a natural creative, gravitating to the fine arts where he explored traditional canvas painting with oil and acrylic mediums.
Ricks continues to raise the bar with his murals, selected numerous times to produce commissioned work for both public and private entities, including, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Murals DC, Busboys and Poets, Ben's Chili Bowl, Kercus, Fitness Optimus Gym, and many more.
The building is located in the center of one of Mount Rainier's business districts, close to The Glut Food Coop, Sweet and Natural Vegan Foods, Joe's Movement Emporium, and other popular local businesses. It is a walkable street and neighborhood, just a block from Rhode Island Avenue. This project will enhance the visibility of the business district on 34th Street and enlighten public experience through the visual arts.
The size of the area allocated for the mural is 12 feet wide by 13 feet high. The exterior side wall is brick and in good condition. The MRAC does not expect any significant wall preparation prior to the implementation of the mural. The mural artist will be expected to use appropriate materials to ensure the longevity of the mural for at least 10 years, including power washing prior to installation and applying an anti-graffiti coating upon completion.
Submissions were considered from local artists who reside or hold studio space in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Three finalists were selected and given a $350 stipend to submit a design proposal for the project. One artist was selected and awarded $3,500 to complete the mural. The budget awarded will cover all expenses associated with the creation of the mural, which includes but are not limited to paint, materials, wall preparation, insurance, and the application of an anti-graffiti coating (supplied by the Arts Commission).
