The City of Mount Rainier is proud to announce a major step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future after securing $1,255,000 in federal funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Carbon Reduction Program (CRP)
This significant investment, administered by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT-SHA), will advance Mount Rainier’s Zero-Emission Fleet Project with the purchase of two all-electric refuse trucks and the installation of two high-capacity Level 3 fast chargers. The new vehicles will replace the aging diesel trucks currently used by the Public Works Department and are projected to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 16.90 tons annually. In addition to cleaner air, the community will benefit from significantly quieter operations in residential neighborhoods.
The City is providing a 20% local match to this grant, demonstrating its commitment to modernizing its fleet and investing in essential EV infrastructure. This project supports the City's long-term goals for reducing carbon emissions and fulfilling its green initiatives. The City currently utilizes an electric vehicle for Police Department Parking Enforcement and is dedicated to expanding EV use in City services.
The City extends its gratitude to the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration for supporting initiatives that build sustainable cities.
About the Carbon Reduction Program
The Carbon Reduction Program, established under the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), provides $6.4 billion in formula funding nationwide from FY 2022 through FY 2026. The program supports projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions from on-road transportation sources. Sixty-five percent of each state’s funding is allocated based on population distribution, while the remaining 35 percent may be used anywhere within the state.
