The City of Mount Rainier proudly welcomed Katherine Perez as its new Chief of Police and celebrated the promotion of Andre Williams to Assistant Chief of Police during a swearing-in ceremony held on Tuesday, September 16.
Chief Perez has over four decades of experience in law enforcement, public safety, and community engagement. She began her career in Connecticut, rising to Captain and Commander of the Major Crimes Bureau. She later served as Chief of Police in District Heights and as the founding Chief in Bowie, where she established the city’s police department. Her leadership spans municipal, university, and healthcare settings, including roles at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins Health System. A strong advocate for education, she also teaches at the University of Maryland and has instructed for the U.S. Department of Justice on community policing and equity.
As she assumes her new role, Chief Perez expressed a commitment to transparency, communication, and strong community partnerships. Her goal is to foster trust while ensuring that all residents and businesses in Mount Rainier feel safe, supported, and heard.
Joining her in leadership is Assistant Chief Andre Williams, a 26-year veteran of the Mount Rainier Police Department. Williams began his law enforcement career in the Town of Princess Anne before joining the Mount Rainier force, where he rose through the ranks. He is known for his integrity, professionalism, and steady leadership, particularly during recent departmental transitions. As Assistant Chief, he will continue to help guide the department forward alongside Chief Perez.
The swearing-in ceremony was officiated by Mayor Celina Benitez and attended by Councilmembers Danielle Carter and Jenny Hoffpauir, City Manager Kourosh Kamali, City staff, and family members. Also in attendance is Chief Anthony Ayers of Brentwood.
Mayor Benitez expressed strong support for the department’s new leadership team. She emphasized that while challenges remain, she is optimistic about the future of policing in Mount Rainier under Chief Perez’s leadership.
