Career Firefighters to Return to Bunker Hill Fire Station

Mount Rainier News Posted on December 12, 2024

Career firefighters are set to return to the Bunker Hill Volunteer Fire Station (Station 855). Prince George’s County Fire Chief Tiffany Green confirmed this change in a December 11 letter to Mayor Celina Benitez, announcing that the new staffing arrangement will take effect on December 29, 2024.

As outlined in the letter, Station 855 will be staffed with 24 career personnel across four shifts. Each shift will include six personnel operating a Paramedic Engine with four staff and a Paramedic Ambulance with two staff, ensuring Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities—an upgrade before the staffing reallocation.

In June, the Mayor and Council addressed concerns about temporary staffing adjustments caused by a county-wide firefighter shortage. Throughout this period, Mayor Benitez, neighboring municipal mayors, District 47 leadership, County Council, Mount Rainier Volunteer Fire Department (MRVFD), and community members worked closely with Fire Chief Green to ensure consistent emergency service coverage for residents and the return of career firefighters.

“This is the outcome we were hoping for, and we want to thank everyone who made it possible,” said Mayor Benitez. “This collaboration among state, county, and municipal leaders and the Fire/EMS department ensures our residents receive the high-quality emergency services they deserve and reaffirms our shared commitment to safety and preparedness,” she added.
