The City of Mount Rainier is committed to ensuring the safety of all students as they travel to and from school. Home to Mount Rainier Elementary School on 32nd Street and Bunker Hill, and Thomas S. Stone Elementary School on 34th Street, the city recognizes the important role everyone plays in keeping children safe during school hours.
School zones are busy, high-traffic areas, particularly during morning drop-offs between 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and afternoon pickups between 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Here are some important reminders for everyone driving through school zones during school hours to ensure the safety of our children.
- Speed Limits: Follow reduced speed limits at school zones. Speeding not only increases the risk of accidents but also endangers the lives of children.
- Congestion Reduction: Consider using alternate routes if you are not involved in dropping off or picking up students to alleviate traffic near the schools.
- Crosswalk Safety: Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and be vigilant towards students crossing the road.
- Distraction-Free Driving: Stay focused on the road. Texting or using your phone in a school zone is illegal and dangerous.
- Respect and Follow Directions from Crossing Guards and Teachers: Crossing guards and teachers are there to help ensure the safety of children. Always stop when directed and give them the space they need to do their job.
The City is actively collaborating with both schools to address road safety and traffic issues.
