The City of Mount Rainier is excited to announce the launch of its Organic Recycling Program, a significant initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The program, rolled out by the City’s Department of Public Works, encourages residents to actively participate in composting and make a meaningful impact on waste reduction.
Organic recycling provides a host of environmental benefits, far beyond simply reducing landfill waste. The materials collected during this pilot program will be processed into high-quality organic compost at the Prince George’s County Organic Facility. This compost enriches the soil, helping retain moisture, suppress plant diseases and pests, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Additionally, organic recycling plays a significant role in lowering methane emissions from landfills, directly contributing to a reduction in the community's carbon footprint.
The City encourages all residents to participate in this pilot program and transform their food waste into a valuable, eco-friendly resource. For those interested in opting into the Organic Recycling and Composting Pilot Program, please complete the Opt-In Survey or contact the Department of Public Works at (301) 985-6583 for more information.
Compost bins will be delivered on October 29th and October 31st, with compost collection scheduled every Monday, starting November 12, 2024.
