Black History Month 

 

The City of Mount Rainier joins the entire nation in observing and celebrating Black History Month. This February, we honor the profound impact of African Americans on the history and culture of the United States and beyond. Mayor Celina Benitez, through an official proclamation, declares February as Black History Month in the City of Mount Rainier. The Pan-African flag is also displayed at the City Hall to mark this momentous occasion. 

Throughout the month, the city encourages community members to engage in various programs and events that honor and explore African American Heritage.

  • Community Movie Night and Potluck

The City of Mount Rainier, in collaboration with Mount Rainier Elementary School PTO and Thomas S. Stone Elementary School PTO invites community members to a FREE movie screening of the inspiring movie "Hidden Figures," a captivating portrayal of the incredible journey of three African American women who played pivotal roles at NASA during the space race. The community event also encourages community members to bring a dish to share. The event will on Feb. 23, 6 pm at Mount Rainier Elementary School. 

  • Celebrate Black History at Joe’s Movement Emporium

Joe’s Movement Emporium presents a rich array of activities and programming dedicated to commemorating Black History Month, from compelling art exhibits to thought-provoking plays and expressive platforms centered on African American heritage.   • Prince George’s Parks and Recreation Black Empowerment

The M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, is hosting a dynamic series of events and activities across Prince George’s County. From captivating performances to enlightening history lessons and vibrant festivals, these initiatives celebrate the richness of Black History Month. Explore the full schedule on their website.

  • Prince George’s County Memorial Library

Explore the Black history and culture, creativity, and ingenuity across disciplines at the library! Offering a plethora of resources both in branch and online, the library provides an opportunity to discover and learn more about the contribution of African Americans in our nation and around the world.

  • Prince George's Country Public School Programs

Local schools also contribute to the celebration with dedicated programs acknowledging the significance of Black History Month.

In addition to participating in these enlightening programs and events, we encourage community members to further contribute to the vibrancy of African American culture by supporting Black-owned businesses.
