The City Council passed legislation on March 22 that will create a Safe Street Task Force in the City to adopt a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040. The new legislation endorses the creation of a Vision Zero Action Plan as a comprehensive and collaborative approach to achieving this goal.
Traffic crashes are among the leading causes of death and injury in the United States. In Maryland, 500 crash-related fatalities of nearly 34,000 in the country are reported each year.
The Safety Street Task Force will consist of the City Manager, the Chief of Police, the Director of Public Works, the Director of Code Compliance, the City’s Grant Writer, two members of the Mayor and City Council, representatives from the City’s Tree Commission and Green Team and two volunteers appointed by the Council.
