October is Mount Rainier Native Plant Network Certification in Mount Rainier. The Native Plant Network is a community-driven initiative that encourages residents to plant native species, fostering biodiversity and restoring. habitats. This initiative was introduced by Councilmember Luke Chesek in 2020 and was supported unanimously by the City Council.
The Mount Rainier Green Team is taking the lead in certifying residents to become a member of the Native Plant Network. Membership is open to residents who will dedicate 10% of their landscape to native plants or have planted 25 native plants in their yards. Residents may sign up for a 30-minute yard tour by a native plant specialist this October to assess if they meet the criteria.
Certified members receive a unique sign to display their commitment to native planting. Additionally, residents can designate their homes on a Google map, showcasing their contribution to connecting native habitats in the city.
Biodiversity is essential for a healthy planet, and native plants play a critical role in preserving it. As global biodiversity faces threats from climate change and habitat loss, landscaping with native plants becomes a powerful tool for conservation.
