Celebrating 20 years as a Tree City - Help Plant a Tree & More!

News Archive Posted on April 19, 2023

Mount Rainier will be celebrating Arbor Day on April 29th. This year is special because the city is celebrating 20 years as a Tree City USA. This means the city has dedicated staff, community members, a tree ordinance, and a budget to support the maintenance and planting of trees. That’s good news because trees are important for the planet and for us.

This Arbor Day we are celebrating trees in a couple of different ways and we need your help. Here are a few things you can do.

Help plant trees Saturday, April 29

  • Help us celebrate 20 years by joining the Tree Commission to plant trees at Roger’s Park on Eastern Avenue, Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 10 am-12 pm at Roger’s Park located along Eastern Ave between Bunker Hill and 28th St. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, shovels, and reusable water bottle.

Care for trees. One of the best things we can do is care for the trees we have.

  • Remove invasive vines like English Ivy that choke trees in your yard and create a hazard in our community.
  • Water young trees that have been planted in the past 1-3 years. Young trees need regular water as their root systems develop.
  • Add a layer of leaf or hardwood mulch to keep moisture in the soil during the heat of the summer.

The Mount Rainier Tree Commission is a group of resident volunteers charged to advise the city, educate the community, and advocate for the city's trees. Learn more here: https://www.mountrainiermd.org/government/city-committees/tree-commission
