City Announces Youth Scholarship Program (School Year 2023-2024)

The City invites graduating seniors or college students to submit applications for the Mount Rainier Youth Scholarship Program

Applications are now being accepted for the Mount Rainier Youth Scholarship Program School Year 2023-2024.

The Mount Rainier City Council has established The Mount Rainier Youth Scholarship for Mount Rainier graduating seniors or continuing college students who best personify a commitment to Higher Education. The Mount Rainier City Council will award seven (7) $3,000.00 scholarships to graduating seniors or current college students who will continue their education at a post-secondary institution, including technical or vocational schools. 

To be considered for the Mount Rainier Youth Scholarship, student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a resident of Mount Rainier for at least one year.
  2. Have a 2.5 GPA
  3. Must be entering or be enrolled in a post-secondary, technical or vocational institution for higher learning in the United States.
  4. Complete application & requirements must be submitted prior to the deadline.

HOW TO APPLY?

  1. Complete and file the application before the deadline: Friday, May 12, 2023, by 5:00 pm to City Clerk, Mount Rainier City Hall, 1 Municipal Place, Mount Rainier, Maryland 20712 or email cityclerk@mountrainiermd.org 
  2. Must submit a copy of unofficial transcripts
  3. Provide two (2) letters of recommendation (sealed)

(can be emailed to City Clerk)

  1. Include up to 500-word essay
  2.  Be available to meet with the selection committee when requested.

ESSAY QUESTIONS:

  1.  What would you like your legacy to be? Explain why. 

How are you working towards achieving your goals,  and how would your goals positively impact the City?   

  1.  How do you envision the future, and what could be your role in combating climate change and helping the city achieve its zero-emission goal?  

The Youth Scholarship Committee will determine the recipients of the award based on combination of determining factors, not solely on GPA. Selection is made on the basis of academic achievement; community involvement; extracurricular activities; and a personal interview.

The Mount Rainier Youth Scholarship Program was introduced by Mayor Celina Benitez in 2018 while serving as a Councilmember. This year is the 5th year of the program.
