The City of Mount Rainier and the towns of Brentwood and North Brentwood marched in solidarity along Rhode Island Avenue on June 18th in celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. The Unity Walk started from the City Hall to Brentwood and made its way to Prince George’s African American Museum in North Brentwood. Mayor Celina Benitez of Mount Rainier, Mayor Rocio Termino of Brentwood, Mayor Petrella Robinson of North Brentwood, and Councilmember Evan Dame of North Brentwood also delivered brief speeches with a collective message of the significance of the holiday and the continuous fight of the African Americans for equality up to this day.
Before the unity walk, Mayor Celina Benitez led the flag-raising ceremony and read Juneteenth Proclamation at City Hall. The ceremony was attended by members of the community, Councilmembers Jarrett Stoltzfus and Valerie Woodall, Chief of Police Linwood Alston, Prince George's County Board Member Pamela Boozer-Strother, State and County elected officials and Primary Elections candidates.
