City of Mount Rainier Awarded Pepco’s Sustainable Communities Grant

The City of Mount Rainier is one of the 11 awardees of $125,000 funding from Pepco and Sustainable Maryland to support open space and resiliency projects. The funding is made available through Pepco’s Sustainable Communities Grant program, which promotes open space preservation, parks, and recreation resources improvements, environmental conservation, and innovative resiliency projects.

The City receives $10,000 funding, which will be used to repair and upgrade the community garden located on 31st Street between Windom and Arundel, make it more accessible, re-establish a community tool shed, and create a reliable and sustainable water system.

In collaboration with the Community Garden Committee, the Mount Rainier Green Team, and the City’s grant writer, Councilmember Valerie Woodall, took the lead in submitting the proposal.

Mayor Celina Benitez and Councilmember Woodall received the award on behalf of the City on December 9.

Joe’s Movement Emporium also receives $10,000 to implement a living wall with a green roof made of native plants, a mural, and educational programming.
