MOUNT RAINIER’S NATIVE PLANT NETWORK EVENT AT THE COMMUNITY FOOD FOREST

10 AM TO 12 NN

Join the Mount Rainier Green Team and Councilmember Luke Chesek to learn about Mount Rainier's Native Plant Network and how one can become a steward for the food forest!

The Native Plant Network (NPN) is first-of-its-kind legislation in the state drafted by Councilman Luke Chesek, passed into law by the Mayor and Council, and administered by the Green Team. Its goal is twofold: educating residents on the importance of planting native and incentivizing them to do.

Residents can become members of the NPN by planting at least 25 native plants in their yard or committing 10% of their yard to native plantings. Once certified, members receive a beautiful yard sign designed by Mount Rainier's own Torie Patridge. These signs will be handed out to the inaugural class of members whose yards were certified this past fall during the event.

The team is also building out a google map to showcase where the native habitats are going to be built across our town, identify missing links in the network to target with future educational efforts and share what grows well in members' yards. These efforts have spawned a larger push by the Sierra Club's Maryland Chapter for a Native Plant and Wildlife Corridor across the state.
