The City of Mount Rainier is preparing to begin construction to improve street safety and accessibility. High-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and speed humps (based on 60% block signatures’ petition) the first of ten major projects under the City of Mount Rainier’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to enhance pedestrian safety, improve accessibility, and ultimately eliminate traffic-related injuries and fatalities. The City of Mount Rainier has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment, administered by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, to support its continued efforts to enhance stormwater management through green infrastructure. This funding, part of the Prince George’s County Stormwater Stewardship Program, will help the City replace impervious sidewalks with permeable pavement to improve water quality and advance the goals outlined in the County’s Climate Action Plan. Grace Management and Construction will carry out the work on the following dates and locations, weather permitting: - June 16–20, 2025: 37th Street (between Eastern Ave and Newton St)
- June 23–27, 2025: 29th Street (between Taylor St and Upshur St)
- June 30–July 7, 2025: Shepherd Street (between 31st St and 32nd St)

The Mount Rainier Tree Commission is partnering with Joe’s GreenWorks program for a second year to plant trees that clean our air, filter our water, beautify our neighborhood, and reduce flooding. Mount Rainier residents can sign up for a street tree or yard tree until June 30, 2025. The trees will be planted in the Fall. Sign up now.

Mount Rainier is celebrating Pride Day on Saturday, June 7, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM! The celebration begins with a colorful community parade starting at Mount Rainier Elementary School and ending at the Gateway Farmers Market. After the parade, enjoy a vibrant gathering with resource tables, kid-friendly activities, and a fun pet costume contest, so don’t forget to dress up your furry friends for a chance to win! Organized by the City’s Recreation Committee, Pride Day is a joyful tribute to love, inclusion, and community. Come out and show your pride in Mount Rainier! Free paletas will be available to the first 200 attendees. For the safety of all parade participants and spectators, temporary road closures will be enforced during the parade.

On Friday, June 6, 2025, temporary road closures will be in effect for the Mount Rainier Elementary School Peace Parade. The parade will begin at 8:15 AM, with road closures starting at 7:30 AM along the following route: 32nd Street, Shepherd Street, 31st Street, Rainier Avenue, and 33rd Avenue. Please see the map for the entire route. Plan ahead and expect traffic delays.

On Saturday, the City of Mount Rainier proudly celebrated its 115th Anniversary with a successful Mount Rainier Day festival held at the Mount Rainier Nature Center. The event, spearheaded by the Mount Rainier Day Committee, chaired by Mayor Celina Benitez, brought together residents and visitors for a day of community engagement, celebration, and shared pride in our city’s rich history. Highlights from this year’s celebration included a vibrant parade joined by Batala Washington, Ruff Rydaz Percussion Squad, and Naptown Brass Band, dynamic performances by Community Jamboree and Palo’e Alto, and a vibrant festival market featuring local vendors and activities for all ages.
