About the Mount Rainier Youth Advisory Council

The Youth Advisory Council serves the youth of Mount Rainier by informing the City government of the needs and wishes of the youth, and by planning and implementing social, educational, cultural, and recreational activities for the youth.

The council will provide an opportunity for City youth to learn about local government and have a voice, and will provide an opportunity for younger members of the community to build their leadership skills and community network.

The Youth Council will consist of up to five Mount Rainier youth appointed by the Mayor and City Council, representing a cross-section of the City's youth.

The Youth Council shall elect a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson and shall promptly report their names to the Mayor and City Council. Members may be in grade levels 7 through 12, except the Chairperson shall be in the 11th or 12th grade.

The term of each member shall be one year. Members are eligible to reapply annually if they meet member eligibility requirements.

Members must:

• Be and remain residents of the City of Mount Rainier
• Attend meetings on a regular basis and inform the Youth Council of expected absences prior to the meeting from which they may be absent
• Maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) for the current school year
• Fulfill the responsibilities undertaken as a member of the Youth Council
• Conduct themselves in a manner that sets a positive example for youth in the community. A member may be removed from the Youth Council by the Mayor and City Council if the member fails to meet any of the qualifications stated hereinabove or if the member is, in the judgment of the Mayor and City Council, guilty of a crime or misfeasance, malfeasance or nonfeasance in connection with his or her membership on the Youth Council.

Vacancies shall be filled by the Mayor and City Council for the remainder of the unexpired term.

Members shall be appointed annually and shall serve one-year terms.
