The Public Works Department collects household trash from all single family homes and most small apartment buildings within the City of Mount Rainier. Residential trash collection is a curbside collection service and is offered once a week (Wednesday’s). If Wednesday is a holiday pick-up will be done the next day. All trash MUST be in a water tight and rodent proof container with lid. The container can be up to 33 gallons. Residents may have up to four (4) bins. All trash must be placed out after 7 PM on the day before the pickup and before 7AM on the day of the pickup. See the attached calendar for waste collection 2019.

Residential recycling collection is a curbside collection service and is offered once a week (Friday’s). If Saturday is a holiday pick-up will be done the next business day. The Department of Public Works is offering electronic recycling through Unicor. Electronic Items may ONLY be dropped off at the Department of Public Works on the quarterly Saturday drop-off dates; March 17, June 16, September 15, and December 15, 2019. Attached is link to form for accepted materials by unicorn.
Collection of large household items such as sofa, mattress, chairs etc. There is a fee for Refrigerators, freezers and A/c ($25.00) Tires with rim $6.00 and without rim $5.00. You are allowed 6 free pickups per year each up to 3 cubic yards. All appointments must be made before 12 noon on the Friday preceding the pickup day. Special Bulk Trash: Residents can make arrangements with Public Works Department for a Special Bulk Pick Up when the amount exceeds 3 cubic yards or for pickup other than on the 1st or 3rd Monday. The cost is determined by the amount and items to be disposed. An estimate will be made after items are viewed by the department and a price given which must be paid prior to pick up. The minimum fee is $50.00.
Biodegradable yard waste such as lawn clippings and leaves, will be picked up every Monday from March through November without appointment and on the 2nd Monday in December, January and February by prior appointments only. Appointments must be made before 12:00 noon on the Friday before the scheduled pick up. Please call (301) 985- 6558 or schedule here (link). Residents are allowed 3 cubic yards per pick-up. Anyone going over the limit will be asked to pay for the overage (the minimum fee is $50.00). Bamboo and logs are not yard waste, these are collected for bulk trash. Yard waste such as brush and branches must be tied in bundles not more than 4 feet in length and/or 50 pounds. Wire must not be used to tie bundles of yard waste. Leaves and lawn clippings must be placed in paper bags or in trash cans. Residents are not to place loose leaves or other vegetation on the ground as this is a violation with a fine of $25.00 for each separate offense. Loose leaves are only collected curb side in November thru January. A schedule will be published in the city’s newsletter.
