“Chances are, you have never thought of your garden – indeed, of all the space on your property – as a wildlife preserve that represents the last chance we have for sustaining plants and animals that were once common throughout the U.S. But that is exactly the role our suburban landscapes are playing and will play even more into the near future.” - Doug Tallamy, Bringing Nature Home.
We hope this quote piqued your interest in learning about the benefits of planting native habitats right here in your backyard. Towards that end, we invite you to join us on February 22, from 10am-noon, as Joe’s Movement Emporium hosts an educational event, brought to you by the City of Mount Rainier’s Green Team, about the urgency of sustaining our native plant community in our yards and parks.
Linda DeGraff - an artist, naturalist, and former resident of Mount Rainier - will present a slideshow derived from Doug Tallamy’s research and book Bringing Nature Home. In addition, Councilman Luke Chesek will give a brief presentation on the work the City of Mount Rainier is doing to continue its sustainability efforts, including the promotion of native plants and waterways.
For those who want to learn more about planning for your spring native planting, please join us after the presentation in Joe’s downstairs classroom to chat with local native plant experts. If you have any questions, please contact Mimi McKinley-Ward at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also register for the event here: https://www.facebook.
