Newton Street Improvement & Sidewalk Maintenance Projects Update

Construction on Newton Street

NEWTON STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

The Newton Street Improvement Project, led by NZI Construction, is currently underway.  Beginning this week (November 10), contractors will continue curb and sidewalk installations from 37th Street toward Newton Place.

SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE PROJECT

Grace Management & Construction will continue sidewalk maintenance work during this week  at the following locations:

  • 32nd Street between Upshur Street and Varnum Street
  • Windom Road between 32nd Street and 31st Street
  • 35th and 36th Streets between Bunker Hill Road and Shepherd Street

City of Mount Rainier to Host Veterans Day Flag Ceremony and Brunch

Veterans Day Flag Ceremony and Brunch

The City will honor its veterans with a special Veterans Day Flag Ceremony and Brunch on Tuesday, November 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the City of Mount Rainier Police Department Community Room. The celebration will recognize and show appreciation for the veterans residing in the City.

Dr. Tiffany Daniel, an Army veteran, bestselling author, fitness instructor, talk show host, senior information specialist, and tireless advocate for veterans’ wellness, will serve as this year’s featured speaker. Dr. Daniel previously delivered an inspiring address at last year’s event and returns to share her insights and experiences with the community.

Mount Rainier veterans must RSVP to join the reception.

Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive

This Thanksgiving season, let’s come together to support Mount Rainier families in need.  The City is collecting non-perishable dry goods for our annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Distribution. Requested items include gravy, stuffing, rice, cornbread mix, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and maseca or masa harina mix. Your generosity will help ensure more Mount Rainier families have a warm meal to share and a reason to give thanks. Donations can be dropped off at City Hall during office hours.

Pepco Customer Relief Fund

PEPCO Customer Relief Fund

Pepco's Customer Relief Fund is available for qualified residential customers in the Pepco service area. To be eligible to participate in the Pepco Customer Relief Fund, a customer must meet the following criteria:   

  • Active residential customer  
  • 60+ days past due  
  • Carry a balance of at least $250 
  • Household that is either limited income or moderate-income

Mayor Celina Benitez and the Mount Rainier City Council proclaim November 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges bravely integrated an all-white school, inspiring generations and advancing equity in education. The City honors her legacy and encourages all residents to reflect on inclusion, dignity, and respect for all.

Curbside Leaf Collection Continues (Red Zone)

The City’s curbside leaf collection has begun on November 4th, and service will continue with the Red Zone. This year’s schedule will be announced a week in advance for each area, allowing our Public Works Department crew to support ongoing city projects while keeping services on track.

Recreation Activities Grant Application

The City of Mount Rainier Recreation Committee is accepting applications for the Recreation Activities Grant, offering up to $2,500 in reimbursable funds to organizations and community members who wish to host programs, activities, or events that engage Mount Rainier residents. From sports and arts to environmental activities, this grant supports initiatives that enhance community life and bring people together. Programs must be open to residents within the city’s boundaries and promote greater community engagement.

City Collects Donations for Annual Coat Drive

Community members are invited to donate new and gently used winter coats, along with new socks and mittens, at the City of Mount Rainier Police Department for its annual Coat Drive. All collected items will be distributed to local families and individuals facing hardship. The City of Mount Rainier will be closing two hours early today, Monday, November 10, and will remain closed on Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.  No impact on trash collection.
