Construction Underway on High-Visibility Crosswalks, ADA Ramps & Speed Humps Project in Mount Rainier

Construction officially began on June 30 on Mount Rainier’s High-Visibility Crosswalks, ADA Ramps, and Speed Humps Project, along 34th Street and Chillum Road. Work will continue during the week of July 14, 2025, along Newton Street and 30th Street, weather permitting. Temporary sidewalk closures and parking restrictions may be in effect during this time. This project is part of the Safe Streets Initiative, the first of ten major efforts under the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, a long-term strategy aimed at improving street safety, enhancing accessibility, and eliminating traffic-related injuries and fatalities in Mount Rainier. Newton Street Improvement Project to Begin Soon!

Work for the Newton Street Improvement Project is set to begin in the coming month. Designed by the Low-Income Development Center (LIDC) and funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the project aims to enhance stormwater management, safety, sustainability, and overall neighborhood quality on Newton Street between 34th and 37th Streets. City's Newest Mural Project in Progress

The Mount Rainier Arts Commission’s Mural Project is currently underway at 3510 Rhode Island Avenue, led by 3711 Studios Artist Collective. The vibrant design is currently being brought to life by artists working on-site. Inspired by input from Mount Rainier community members, the mural reflects themes of movement, nature, and togetherness, encouraging reflection, connection, and a sense of place. Read more.

City Accepts Donations for Annual School Supply Drive

The City has launched its annual School Supply Drive, led by our Social Services Coordinator, to support students on their educational journey. Your donation of backpacks, pencils, new uniforms, socks, and other essential school supplies will be distributed during the City's Back to School Fair on August 20 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mount Rainier Nature Center. Donations may be dropped off at the Mount Rainier Police Department or City Hall during office hours.

Beginning in early July, Pepco is launching the Customer Relief Fund, a one-time relief program that provides financial support for those challenged by high energy costs. The City of Mount Rainier invites young learners and their families to the 2025 Back-to-School Fair on Wednesday, August 20, from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Mount Rainier Nature Center! Organized and led by our Social Services Coordinator, in partnership with the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, the event offers free school supplies and gently used clothing for students.
