New High-Visibility Crosswalks, ADA Ramps, and Speed Humps Coming to Mount Rainier Streets

The City of Mount Rainier is preparing to begin construction to improve street safety and accessibility. Following a public bidding process, the City has awarded Grace Management and Construction the contract to install high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and speed humps (based on a 60% block signatures’ petition) throughout the city.

This project is the first of ten major projects under the City of Mount Rainier’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to enhance pedestrian safety, improve accessibility, and ultimately eliminate traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

Funded by a $9.76 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, with a matching $2.44 million contribution from the City, the project will focus on high-traffic areas as determined in a comprehensive road and street study commissioned by the City in 2022. These enhancements aim to help calm vehicle speeds and support safer mobility for all.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the next three weeks, weather permitting.
